Transforming Scars into Art

At Heart & Dagger Tattoo, we believe every scar tells a story. But sometimes, you might want to rewrite that narrative.

Whether you’re looking for a scar cover-up tattoo or a way to celebrate your journey, we specialize in creating custom designs that transform scars into stunning works of art.

Why Choose a Tattoo to Hide Scars?

Covering a scar with a tattoo is more than just camouflage—it’s about reclaiming your confidence. The process of tattooing over scars not only hides the scar but can also promote healing. The tattoo application stimulates collagen production, which helps smooth the scar tissue. The result? A beautiful tattoo that draws attention to the art, not the scar beneath it.

Whether you’re seeking a surgical scar tattoo cover-up, a self-harm scar cover-up tattoo, or a burn scar tattoo cover-up, our team is here to help you feel empowered and proud of your skin.

A Personalized Approach to Scar Camouflage Tattoos

At Heart & Dagger Tattoo, we understand that no two scars—or stories—are the same. That’swhy we take a personalized approach to every scar camouflage tattoo. During your free consultation, we’ll discuss how much of your scar you’d like covered, your preferred style, colours, and any specific ideas you have in mind. From botanical scar cover-ups to bold designs, we’ll create a tattoo that’s uniquely yours.

The consultation is key for the best outcome. This way Connie can see how healed the scar is ( We recommend at least 12 mos or longer of healing time, the older the scar the better ). This way a custom plan can be developed to cover the scar depending on size type. Keep in mind that scars will accept ink a little differently than ‘normal’ skin and may need more than one session in order for the scar to saturate fully.

A deposit is required to begin the design process, and tattoo sessions are $180 per hour.

Connie’s Story: From Scars to Stunning Tattoos

Our passion for scar cover-up tattoos is deeply personal. Connie, the founder of Heart & Dagger, had surgical scars on her feet from a double bunionectomy at the age of 17. The procedure left her with two five-inch scars on both feet. Over time, she decided to transform those scars into something she could be proud of. The tattoos not only covered the scars but also gave her a renewed sense of confidence. Today, she loves showing off her beautiful tattoos instead of hiding her feet.

Navigating Burn Tattoos: Assessment and Texture

Burn scars present a unique challenge in the world of paramedical tattooing. Unlike clean surgical incisions, burns often leave behind uneven textures, bumps, and deep tissue damage. Skin grafts can also be tattooed , as long as they are fully healed ( a few years is preferred ), they also have texture and need to be approached in the same way.

Connie Westgate, the founder of Heart & Dagger, emphasizes that patience and an in-person assessment are crucial when dealing with burn tattoos.

"The number one thing with burns, especially when healing, is they are painful and the risk of infection on an unhealed wound is high," Connie says. "That skin is traumatized."

For this reason, Connie requires clients to wait a few years before attempting to camouflage a severe burn. The wound must be completely healed. Even then, an in-person consultation is mandatory. She often requests a doctor's note to ensure the tissue is ready to safely receive ink.

Working with Texture

One of the most important things to understand about tattooing over a burn is that it changes colour, not texture.

"The texture does not go away with a burn," Connie explains. "We work with it. That is why I have to see it. It is truly custom for skin—the pattern (bumps), the depth and length of the affected area, the colours, etc."

By using clever shading and customized designs, the artist can create an optical illusion that dramatically reduces the visual impact of the scar. However, any physical bumps or indentations will remain.

This rule also applies to keloid scars. It needs to be noted that people with higher melanin levels in their skin tend to keloid more easily. Tattooing over an active keloid can actually cause it to grow larger. While scar cover ups can adjust the colour of a stable keloid, it will not remove the height of the scar itself.
